Venmo Scams

Brand imposter · PaymentsLast updated: September 2026

Venmo made paying friends feel like texting: casual, instant, social. Its imposters lean on that casual trust, and because payments are instant and hard to reverse, Venmo shows up across the whole family of P2P payment scams. The lures cover both sides of a marketplace handshake, plus a costume of Venmo itself.

How Venmo is being impersonated

Popular impersonation lures to pay attention to:

Fake sign-in and security texts

"A new device signed into your Venmo" with a link to a lookalike login page. One password later the scammer owns the account and the bank connected to it, a classic account takeover.

The payment-screenshot seller scam

In marketplace deals, a "buyer" produces a doctored Venmo confirmation, or an email claiming the payment is "pending a business upgrade," to collect the item before any money exists.

Fake support

Numbers seeded into search results and social replies that answer as "Venmo support" and finish with remote access or a drained balance. Searching for a customer service number is one of the most common ways in.

The accidental payment

A stranger sends you money "by accident" and asks for it back. The original payment came from a stolen card and will evaporate once it's reported. The refund you send is the only real money that moves.

Tips for verifying through official channels

  1. 1

The app's Activity feed is the only proof of payment.

If the money doesn't appear in your Venmo balance, it doesn't exist, whatever a screenshot or email may claim.

  2. 2

    Never refund a stranger's "mistake."

Report the payment in the app and let Venmo handle the reversal. That is the only version of events where you can't lose.

  3. 3

Support lives in the app and at venmo.com, nowhere else.

And when selling to strangers, use the goods-and-services option, which is the only Venmo payment that carries protection.
