Key insights

Seven things 250K+ shopping sites told us.

Today’s scam stores run like real retailers, with a catalog, a marketing department and a merchandising calendar.

1Nonstop new stores

A never-before-seen scam store is reported every 3 minutes.

Fraudulent shopping sites are no longer one-off scam sellers. Scamwise sees a growing industry of professional scam retailers, opening new storefronts faster than they can be taken down.

2The catalog

Clothing is the #1 product in scam stores, followed by electronics, tools, and jewelry.

Single-product cons have become boutique and big-box stores with hundreds of products, size charts and return policies. Much of it is AI-generated, which is how a store with no real inventory fills hundreds of product pages overnight.

80% of scam stores used an impossible discount or lazy pricing.

3The merchandising calendar

Scammers keep a relentless merchandising calendar, hitting all the popular trends.

Scam retailers work the calendar like a merchandising team: World Cup merch in June, back-to-school in August, Halloween decor by early October. Fake holiday stores have been up since June.

4The marketing department

At least 1 in 5 fake stores traced back to an ad on a major platform, with Google and Meta leading the way.

Scammers find customers the same way legitimate retailers do: through ads on social media and search. Nobody types a scam store’s address into a browser. They click it from an ad while scrolling.

80% of ad fingerprints came from Google or Meta.

6Here today, gone tomorrow

7 in 10 fake stores are gone 90 days after being reported to Scamwise.

Scam stores are built to be disposable. They borrow the credibility of trusted platforms, collect payments, and disappear before anyone can trace them. When one gets shut down, another can be live within days or even hours.

7AI shoppers

AI shoppers are the new target. The old red flags fail for humans and machines.

Personal AI agents are racing to take over restocking, booking travel, finding the gift and checking out. That adds a third party to every transaction, one with its own blind spots and, increasingly, your card on file.

The Checkout Check

Tips for spotting fake stores before you pay.

  1. If you see: A polished store you’ve never heard of

Search its name plus “reviews” or “scam.”

  2. If you see: An impossible discount

Price-check it against a retailer you know.

  3. If you see: An ad in your feed

Treat ads as strangers. Search for the merchant yourself.

  4. If you see: A “Powered by Shopify” storefront

Check the seller, not the platform logo.

  5. If you see: Seasonal urgency or a countdown clock

The clock is bait. Slow down.

  6. If you see: A brand-new site

Domain age matters. Days-old stores have no track record.

Scamwise’s detection system checks each site against signals like domain age, where the store is hosted, how its prices compare, and how shoppers found it, along with other technical and behavioral signals. Stores judged Definitely or Likely a Scam count as fake stores in this report.
No. Scamwise checks are anonymous, and all data in this report is aggregated and anonymized. Nothing here identifies the people who submitted a site.
No. Scammers use the same tools real businesses use, because the trust those brands carry makes a fake store look real. Platforms do act on reports: Shopify has shut down more than 500 scam stores since they were reported to Scamwise. For shoppers, the lesson is to check the seller, not the platform logo.
Search the store’s name plus “reviews” or “scam,” price-check any deal against a retailer you know, and find the merchant yourself instead of clicking the ad. Pay with a credit card. The full checklist, The Checkout Check, is in the report.
Yes, it’s free. Scamwise gives anyone a fast, anonymous second opinion on suspicious texts, calls, emails, and websites, at scamwise.com and in the Scamwise app.
It checks the store before you check out, whether you found the store or your AI assistant did.
For browsing, yes. Let it search, compare, and build a shortlist, but keep approval on so it can’t buy without you. AI shoppers are built to finish the job, and a fake store can look like the best deal on the page.
