Toll smishing lives on that uncertainty, and it moves in waves: national text blasts that crest for a few weeks, go quiet, then return wearing a different state's branding.

The unpaid-toll text
"Your vehicle has an unpaid toll of $6.99. Pay now to avoid a $50 late fee." The link opens a convincing clone of a toll-agency site. The small fee exists to make the request feel routine while the payment form collects your full card details.
The out-of-state variant
Messages citing a state you drove through recently, or never have, betting you'll pay a few dollars rather than investigate an unfamiliar toll system.
Escalation pressure
Follow-ups threatening collections, DMV holds, or registration blocks, designed to rush the payment through before you think to check.
Second channel checks
Tips for verifying through official channels

Check your balance where your transponder lives.
Type your toll agency’s real site (e-zpassny.com, sunpass.com, thetollroads.com, or your state's own) or open its app. Your actual balance and any violations are listed there.

Toll agencies don't collect by text link.
Genuine unpaid-toll notices arrive by mail to the vehicle's registered address. A payment link in a text message settles the question by itself.

Report and delete.
Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) and file at ic3.gov if you clicked. If you entered a card number, call the number on the back of that card right away.
